Out & About Norfolk Plein Air Paint Out is proud to have Bill White,
as our 2011 Juror. Bill White is an artist and teacher, recently retired
from the Art Department at Hollins University, in Roanoke VA. Since 1971 he has inspired generations of Hollins students to see painting as an act of discovery.
White is a recipient of Hollins' Herta Freitag Faculty Award and the Distinguished Service Award for his dedication to his students, colleagues, and profession.
He was instrumental in the planning and creation of the Wetherill Visual Arts Center. Upon Bill's retirement from Hollins, in 2010, the university announced a new fund with a goal of $50,000 to endow the William G. White Endowed Fund for Studio Art. This endowment seeks to honor White's legacy by creating a fund to bring regional and national artists to Hollins for short periods of time to present lectures, conduct workshops, and meet with students.
No stranger to Plein Air, he has been called "a painter who understands the expressive potential of oil paint". The artist's main interest is "capturing the light in the landscape, that gives color and shape to his active paint surface".
Bill took a sabbatical in 2006 and he and his wife, Linda, spent time painting throughout the Umbrian region of Italy. He has painted the landscape of western Virginia, England, Italy and France.
It is an honor to have Bill White join the prestigious list of O&A Jurors. |
